Dingle Peninsula, County Kerry

County Kerry offers some of the most spectacular scenery I have ever seen. My favorite part of the journey was the trip around Slea Head, the southwestern tip of Dingle Peninsula. You can see the edge of it in the photo to the right, with the Blasket Islands in the background. (Click on the photo for a larger view.) Dingle Peninsula's soft hills slope gently into the crashing sea. They are quite different than the rugged cliffs in the Burren or on the Aran Islands.

I drove through Dingle and the Ring of Kerry with Siobhan, Pete, and Anthea. On the day that we followed the winding roads through Slea Head, the wind was alternately gentle and fierce, depending on nature's temper, which seemed to change from moment to moment. It was sunny for part of our drive, then clouds rolled in and slick streams of light illuminated the sea and land. On Dingle, you can see the rain coming for miles before it arrives, and it feels lovely when it finally surrounds you.
