Limerick, County Limerick

I traveled to Limerick to see some Irish friends that I'd met in California. In addition to meeting up with them and enjoying a few evenings at Limerick, I also found time to poke around Bunratty Castle, where I climbed through narrow passageways spiraling upward until I found a door that led me outside. There, I photographed the Irish flag just as it was being illuminated by a beautiful sun setting over the town.

Limerick is situated at the mouth of the River Shannon. One moment we would be sprinkled by showers coming in from the Atlantic, the next moment the sun would be shining. In Castletroy, a community just outside the heart of the city, the intricate intertwining of sun and rain wove together the most magnificent rainbow I have ever seen.

The arch was huge. We looked up, and were embraced by its brilliant strands. It was so spectacular that I didn't want to distract myself by fumbling for the camera to take a photo. Instead, I slowed down and allowed myself to feel each color so that it would be captured in my mind. It resides now only in my memory, and it is one of my favorite moments in Ireland.
